About Us

The Scout Radio and Electronics Service Unit (SRESU) is a team under Scouts Victoria. We provide radio and electronics activities for all sections from Joeys right through to Rovers as well as assisting with event communications for ScoutHike and similar events throughout the state.

We also have a number of qualified assessors for Amateur Radio and Marine Radio operators’ certificates of proficiency. Each year we run a number of training and assessment courses for these qualifications, usually for Scout-age and above.

Another role of the SRESU is the coordination of the annual Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) and Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI) within Victoria, including special ‘Scout’ callsigns and the distribution of event badges.

Our portable amateur radio repeater VK3RSR is available to assist Scouting events and activities. Our fixed repeater network in Melbourne (including Emerald, Upwey, and Mt St Leonard) is also available for licenced members of Scouting and the wider community. Internet linking on these repeaters means that you can connect from much further afield – via another IRLP enabled repeater within Victoria, or anywhere in the world!

Membership of the SRESU is open to all members of Scouts Victoria who have an interest in radio or electronic activities – an amateur radio licence is not a prerequisite for membership.

We are always happy to hear from you and to discuss supporting an activity or event for your group, district or region – including specialist section nights. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with us to discuss further.

We meet monthly (except for January) on the second Tuesday at the Branch Activity Training Centre (BATCave) in Mt Waverley and visitors are always welcome.
